North Dakota Voters Weigh In on Legalizing Marijuana: New Ad Highlights Economic Potential
As the November 5th election approaches, a new ad is emphasizing the potential economic benefits of legalizing marijuana in North Dakota. The ad, released by the campaign behind the legalization measure, highlights the revenue that the state is missing out on as its neighbors, Montana and Minnesota, build up their cannabis markets.
The ad asks, “Would you throw away millions of dollars?” and points out that while North Dakota is leaving cannabis tax revenue on the table, its neighbors are reaping the benefits. The ad concludes, “Don’t let our money cross state lines. Vote yes on Measure 5 and keep North Dakota’s cash at home.”
The campaign behind the legalization measure, New Economic Frontier, has also released an email blast promoting the ad, as well as providing information on other potential benefits of the reform and encouraging supporters to spread the message ahead of the election.
A recent poll found that the legalization measure is ahead with a plurality of support, but still lacks the majority needed to pass due to a sizable share of undecided voters. The campaign has acknowledged that they still have work to do to secure a majority of the vote.
The ad comes amid a stepped-up opposition push, with several groups, including the North Dakota Medical Association, Hospital Association, Peace Officers Association, Chiefs of Police Association, and Sheriffs and Deputies Association, recently coming out against the measure.
The legalization measure, if passed, would allow adults 21 and older to possess up to one ounce of marijuana flower, four grams of concentrate, and 300 milligrams of edibles, and would establish a limited number of licensed dispensaries. The state Department of Health and Human Services or another agency designated by the legislature would be responsible for regulating the program.
The proposal would also limit regulators to approving licenses for up to seven cannabis manufacturers and 18 retailers, and would require regulators to develop separate application processes for existing medical cannabis dispensaries and non-existing companies that wish to become recreational operators.
The campaign is emphasizing the potential tax revenue, job growth, and criminal justice reform benefits of the legalization measure, as well as highlighting that the issue enjoys majority bipartisan support nationally. The campaign is also stressing that the ballot proposal “reflects conservative values.”
The election will be close, and every vote counts. If you want to see positive change in North Dakota, make sure your voice is heard on November 5th. Vote YES on Measure 5 and help bring our state toward a safer, thriving future.
