According to the Nebraska Examiner, the group has obtained at least 55,000 signatures in the necessary 38 counties for each of its two petitions. However, there is still work to be done to verify the signatures and reach the total of 87,000 signatures required before the July 3 deadline.
This is the third petition drive designed to bring medical marijuana to the state. Previous attempts in 2020 and 2022 did not succeed, with the state’s Supreme Court disqualifying the measure in 2020 and petition collectors failing to meet the required number of signatures in 2022.
Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has expressed concerns about legalizing marijuana, citing potential harm to children. However, medical marijuana advocates argue that the drug should be legalized and regulated, rather than relying solely on the FDA’s approval process.
