Mississippi’s Medical Marijuana Industry Faces Uncertain Future Amidst Unregulated Hemp Competition
Mississippi’s medical marijuana industry has made significant progress since its inception in 2022, with over 20,000 patients benefiting from the highly regulated and high-quality products. However, the industry is now facing a new challenge from unregulated and potentially unsafe hemp products.
The FDA and CDC have warned against the use of intoxicating hemp products, citing concerns over their lack of regulation, testing, and labeling. These products, which contain synthesized forms of THC, are sold over-the-counter in convenience stores and gas stations, and some may provide relief similar to medical marijuana.
A recent investigation found that some hemp products contained pesticides, mycotoxins, and high levels of THC, exceeding legal limits. Despite this, the Mississippi Legislature failed to pass a bill that would have brought intoxicating hemp products under medical marijuana guidelines.
The industry is also grappling with challenges beyond hemp competition, including new regulations regarding mold and the need for expensive equipment to irradiate plants during the drying process. Additionally, the surge in cultivators and processors has led to an overbuilt industry, with some states like Arkansas serving a larger patient base with fewer dispensaries.
To ensure the success of Mississippi’s medical marijuana industry, the Legislature must take steps to protect it from unregulated competition and address the challenges it faces. By doing so, the state can maintain a strong and safe industry that benefits patients and the economy.
