Texas Medical Marijuana Program Faces Challenges Amid Limited Access and Doctor Shortage

Texas Department of Public Safety Releases Report on Medical Marijuana Program

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has published a new report on the state’s Compassionate Use Program (CUP), which allows doctors to prescribe low-THC products to patients with specific medical conditions. The report, compiled by Weeds Inc., highlights the challenges patients and dispensing organizations face in accessing the program due to geographical limitations.

The report notes that while the Legislature has expanded the list of qualifying conditions, the number of doctors authorized to prescribe medical marijuana has not increased, and dispensary locations are largely concentrated in Central Texas. To address these issues, Weeds Inc. recommends recruiting more doctors to participate in the program, allowing existing dispensaries to open additional locations outside of Central Texas, and permitting new dispensaries to operate in other parts of the state.

The DPS is not currently proposing changes to the program, but will pass the report along to lawmakers for consideration ahead of the next legislative session in January. The full report is available on the DPS website for public review.
