Kentucky Governor Seeks Federal Marijuana Reclassification to Protect Second Amendment Rights

Kentucky Governor Seeks Federal Marijuana Reform Amid State’s Medical Marijuana Push

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is urging federal lawmakers to reclassify marijuana, citing the need for individuals with legal medical marijuana cards to retain their Second Amendment rights. Currently, federal regulations prohibit individuals with marijuana cards from purchasing firearms due to the drug’s classification as a Schedule 1 substance, alongside heroin, methamphetamine, and LSD.

The governor’s push for reform comes as Kentucky navigates the legalization of medical marijuana. Beshear emphasized the importance of reclassification, citing the need for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to have access to relief without sacrificing their constitutional rights.

Last year, there was an effort to reclassify marijuana after President Joe Biden pardoned thousands of individuals for low-level cannabis offenses. However, those efforts appear to have stalled. The governor’s renewed call for reform aims to address the ongoing issue and ensure that individuals with legal medical marijuana cards can exercise their Second Amendment rights without restriction.
