Willowick City Council to Consider Allowing Recreational Marijuana Sales
The Willowick Planning Commission has recommended that the city council allow the sale of recreational marijuana in the city. The commission’s decision comes after the moratorium on recreational marijuana sales expired, and the city is now considering its options.
According to Planning Commission Chairman Mark Carden, the city can either allow marijuana sales or prohibit them. The commission has discussed the potential locations for recreational marijuana businesses, with options including a small area on East 305th Street and another area on Euclid Avenue.
The city has also discussed the proximity of recreational marijuana businesses to schools, daycares, churches, and parks. Planning Commission members have reviewed the state guidelines for recreational marijuana sales and have discussed the potential revenue that the city could generate from taxes on these businesses.
The city’s Law Director, Stephanie Landgraf, has advised that the city cannot extend the moratorium on recreational marijuana sales for more than 12 months. However, the city could consider a shorter moratorium of up to 90 days or six months.
The city’s Chief Housing and Zoning Inspector, Sean Brennan, has provided information on the ordinances of other cities that have allowed recreational marijuana sales. Brennan has also provided information on the state regulations that apply to recreational marijuana businesses.
The city council is set to discuss the issue at its next meeting on January 21. The council will consider the Planning Commission’s recommendation and make a decision on whether to allow recreational marijuana sales in the city.
