Brooklyn Man Found Guilty of Murder in Marijuana-Related Robbery Gone Wrong

A Brooklyn man, Daniel Matthews, 45, has been found guilty of murdering a 46-year-old man from Franklin Township, New Jersey, during a robbery that involved a large quantity of marijuana. The victim, Artis Timothy Young, was reported missing by his family on December 30, 2023, and his body was later found in Brooklyn. The investigation began when Franklin police discovered that Young was planning to meet Matthews in the township. However, the meeting took a deadly turn, and Young’s body was found in Brooklyn the next day. Surveillance video showed Matthews and another suspect, Andrew Mumby, 47, of New Brunswick, at multiple locations with Young’s car in the 12 hours after the homicide.

Matthews’ cellphone placed him at the scene of the killing, the disposal of the body, and the abandonment of Young’s car. The investigation also found Young’s blood and DNA in the trunk of his car, on the floor of the garage at Matthews’ family residence, and on the sweatsuit Matthews was wearing. Matthews’ DNA was also found on the sweatsuit with Young’s blood.

Mumby, who was also charged in connection with the homicide, pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter and is scheduled to be sentenced on March 24. The case is a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of drug-related violence.
