Dozen Students Fall Ill After Eating Marijuana Gummies at Long Island Middle School
A dozen students at William Floyd Middle School in Moriches, Long Island, became ill after consuming marijuana gummies on Monday morning. The students, aged 12 to 13, began vomiting and exhibiting symptoms such as dizziness and rapid heart rates after taking the edibles.
According to school officials, one student distributed the gummies to 11 of their classmates. The school nurse called for emergency medical assistance, and 11 of the students were hospitalized as a precaution. The 12th student was sent home with their parent.
Parents were initially notified through a message on the school’s website, phone calls, or through their children. Many expressed concern and frustration about the situation, with one parent saying, “You don’t know where they got it from and what’s mixed in there.”
The school district has promised to take appropriate disciplinary action and will continue to emphasize the dangers of drug use, including edible marijuana, through anti-drug programs and assemblies.
This incident is part of a growing trend of children being taken to emergency rooms for marijuana exposure, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The exact amount of THC in the gummies and how the student obtained them are still unknown.
Suffolk County Police have decided not to file criminal charges, and the school will handle any discipline. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a warning, advising parents to keep cannabis products in a locked container and out of reach of children.
The incident has raised concerns about the availability and appearance of edible marijuana products, which can be sold in jars and bundles that resemble candy. Parents and authorities are urging caution and emphasizing the importance of responsible cannabis use.
