A Henry County man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for causing a fatal traffic accident while under the influence of marijuana. Logan M. Chambers, 23, of Knightstown, pleaded guilty to charges related to the accident, which occurred on April 26, 2020. Chambers was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe at an unsafe speed on Henry County Road 500 East when the SUV left the road, rolled over, and came to rest in a field.
The accident resulted in the death of a 19-year-old passenger, Kodie Matthew Skelton, and serious injuries to another passenger, including a broken shoulder and lacerated spleen. None of the five occupants in the vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Chambers told a sheriff’s deputy that he had smoked marijuana about 10 hours before the accident, and blood tests confirmed the presence of THC, a psychoactive compound associated with marijuana, in his system.
Judge Kit Crane of Henry Circuit Court 2 imposed a seven-year sentence, with two years suspended, for the most serious charge of causing death while driving with a controlled substance in his system. Chambers also received a three-year sentence, with one year suspended, for causing serious bodily injury while driving with a controlled substance in his system.
Chambers will be on probation for three years upon his release from prison and has already been given credit for one day spent in the Henry County Jail.
