Michigan’s Cannabis Industry Faces Crisis: Regulator Warns of Industry-Wide Struggles
Michigan’s cannabis regulator, the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA), is facing significant challenges in its efforts to oversee the state’s recreational cannabis industry. He noted that the average retail price for an ounce of recreational marijuana flower has dropped to $65.14, a 28% decline from the same month last year. Industry representatives echoed Hanna’s concerns, with Robin Schneider, executive director of the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association, stating that marijuana growers who have invested their life savings in their businesses are now at risk of losing everything. Schneider shared a personal anecdote about a member who had to borrow money from her to buy Christmas presents for their children, highlighting the devastating impact of the industry’s struggles on individuals and families.
Hanna urged lawmakers to address the agency’s limitations, including its inability to suspend licenses for egregious conduct and its lack of authority to regulate hemp products. He also expressed concerns about the long-term viability of the industry, predicting that consolidation will occur as smaller businesses struggle to survive.
