Niles Township Clears Way for Recreational Pot Sales, Generating Revenue and Jobs

Niles Township May Soon Welcome Recreational Pot Sales

The commercial strip on the south end of Niles Township, known for its recreational activities such as mini golf, paintball, and roller skating, may soon become a hub for recreational cannabis sales. The township board has given final approval to its marijuana ordinance, paving the way for the acceptance of dispensary license applications as early as May 2.

The ordinance, which passed with a 5-1 vote, allows for an unlimited number of retail stores and imposes a $5,000 application fee. While some residents are concerned about the potential impact on the community, others see it as a way to generate revenue and create jobs.

However, not everyone is pleased with the decision. Some residents spoke out against the ordinance, expressing concerns about the potential long-term effects on the township. One resident warned that the decision could have far-reaching consequences for future generations.

Additionally, an attorney, James Lockwood, has threatened to file a complaint against the township board, alleging that one board member had a conflict of interest due to his career in real estate. Township Supervisor Marge Durem-Hiatt defended the board’s decision, stating that they had to follow the will of the people and that the ordinance was recommended by their attorneys.

It remains unclear how many dispensaries will ultimately be established in the township, but the decision marks a significant shift for the community. As the township moves forward with the implementation of the ordinance, residents will be watching closely to see how the decision affects their community.
