New Poll Suggests Marijuana Use Has a Positive Impact on Careers
A recent survey conducted by NuggMD, a medical cannabis telehealth platform, has found that a majority of marijuana consumers believe that their use of cannabis has had a positive impact on their careers. The poll, which questioned 493 marijuana consumers, found that 54% of respondents reported a positive effect on their job or career, with 28% describing it as “very positive”.
In contrast, only 10% of respondents said that their marijuana use had a negative impact on their careers, while 36% reported no impact at all. The poll’s findings suggest that the negative narrative surrounding marijuana use in the workplace may be overstated.
Andrew Graham, head of communications at NuggMD, noted that the poll’s results challenge the notion that marijuana use leads to workplace amotivation. Instead, he suggested that employers should take a more nuanced approach to cannabis use in the workplace, recognizing its potential benefits.
The poll’s findings are consistent with previous studies that have suggested that marijuana use can have a positive impact on the workforce. For example, a 2021 study found that adult-use legalization is associated with an increase in workforce productivity and a decrease in workplace injuries.
A more recent study on marijuana legalization’s effect on workers’ compensation found that while the policy change is associated with a gradual increase in workers’ comp claims, the average cost per claim actually fell after the policy change. Additionally, the study found that patient use of prescription drugs, including opioids and other painkillers, decreased after the policy change.
The poll’s findings also highlight the diversity of marijuana use across different industries. For example, employees in the food service and hospitality industries, as well as those in arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupations, reported higher rates of marijuana use than other industries.
Overall, the poll’s findings suggest that marijuana use is not a hindrance to career success, but rather a tool that can have a positive impact on one’s job and career. As the cannabis industry continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see more research and discussion on the topic of marijuana use in the workplace.
