Iowa’s Cannabis Users: A Surprisingly Active and Engaged Group

Iowa’s Marijuana Users: Engaged and Active Citizens, Study Finds

Contrary to the stereotype of marijuana users as lazy and apathetic, a recent survey has revealed that many cannabis consumers in Iowa are actually engaged and active citizens. The study, conducted by Consumer Research Around Cannabis/The Media Audit, found that 16.2% of adults in Des Moines reported using or buying cannabis in the past month, a significant proportion that suggests a pent-up market.

The survey also found that cannabis consumers in Des Moines align with national trends, with 24.1% of adults 18+ reporting use or purchase in the past month. The data also showed that cannabis users in Des Moines are more likely to be employed, own a home, and vote regularly compared to the general population.

The study’s findings are consistent with research by Jonathan Caulkins, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, who has been studying cannabis legalization for 15 years. Caulkins notes that the trend towards increased cannabis use is driven by middle-class, employed adults who are looking for a way to relax and unwind.

The survey also found that cannabis consumers in Des Moines are more likely to be male, with 55.5% of users identifying as male, compared to 44.5% who identify as female. However, Caulkins notes that the gender gap is narrowing as cannabis becomes more legal and accepted.

The study’s findings have implications for future legislative efforts to legalize adult recreational cannabis sales in Iowa. With a growing body of citizens supporting legalization, advocates may find it easier to push for change in the state legislature.

Overall, the study’s findings challenge the stereotype of marijuana users as lazy and apathetic, and instead portray them as engaged and active citizens who are looking for a way to relax and unwind.
