Recreational Marijuana: Which States Have Legalized It?
Despite being classified as a Schedule I drug at the federal level, 24 US states have legalized recreational marijuana. However, Louisiana is not one of them. While recreational marijuana remains illegal under federal law, 48 states, including Washington D.C. and three US territories, have legalized medical marijuana.
In Louisiana, medical marijuana is legal, but only for patients with certain medical conditions. The state’s medical marijuana law has expanded over the years to include a broader range of conditions, allowing patients to purchase medical cannabis at state-licensed pharmacies.
To qualify for medical marijuana in Louisiana, patients must have a debilitating medical condition and receive a recommendation from a licensed physician. The doctor must be in good standing with the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners and the recommendation must be communicated in a way allowed by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy.
