Massachusetts Regulators Expected to Pass Social Consumption of Cannabis Regulations

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission is poised to pass regulations allowing social consumption of cannabis, according to CCC Chair Shannon O’Brien. The new regulations would permit cannabis businesses to allow customers to use their products on-site, including at dispensaries, lounges, and even yoga studios.

Once approved, municipalities will have the final say on whether they want social consumption sites in their area. O’Brien emphasized the importance of local input, saying that communities will play a significant role in determining how social consumption fits into their culture and character.

To ensure public safety, the regulations will include safeguards such as requiring licensees to have a rideshare plan and prohibiting the co-mingling of alcohol and cannabis. Licensees will also be required to serve food and water.

The first social consumption license will be reserved for members of the CCC’s social equity program. Brian Keith, founder and COO of Rooted In dispensary in Boston, welcomed the news, stating that it will help his business and others in the industry by providing a convenient and legal way for customers to consume cannabis.

The approval of social consumption regulations has been eagerly anticipated by many in the industry. With the new regulations, Massachusetts will join a growing number of states allowing social consumption of cannabis, providing a unique and convenient experience for customers.
