Canada’s Marijuana Legalization Support Reaches New High: 65% of Canadians Back Reform

Canada’s Support for Marijuana Legalization Continues to Grow, Poll Finds

A new poll conducted by Research Co. has revealed that a majority of Canadians support the legalization of marijuana, with 65% of respondents agreeing with the reform. This marks a three percentage point increase since the firm’s last poll on the topic in 2024.

The survey, which interviewed 1,002 adults in Canada between December 7-9, 2025, also found that 29% of respondents disagree with marijuana legalization, while 6% are undecided.

Broken down by demographic, the poll found that majority support for marijuana legalization exists across all geographic and racial groups.

The survey also asked about Canadians’ personal experiences with marijuana, with 36% reporting that they used the drug prior to its legalization in 2018, 15% saying they started using it after legalization, and 49% stating that they have never tried it.

When it comes to acquiring marijuana, 48% of those who have used it since legalization say they have only purchased it from a licensed retailer, while 17% say they have mostly bought it from a legal shop.

Interestingly, the poll found that while Canadians are increasingly supportive of marijuana legalization, there is less enthusiasm for legalizing other drugs. Only 14% of respondents support legalizing MDMA, 12% support legalizing powder cocaine, and 10% support legalizing crack cocaine.

The survey also asked about drug testing for employees, with 34% of respondents saying they definitely support the practice, 30% saying they probably support it, and 13% saying they definitely do not support it. Notably, there is no political divide on this issue, with majorities of respondents from all three main political parties supporting drug testing.

The poll’s findings on the economic impact of the cannabis industry are also worth noting. A majority of Canadians (59%) view the sector as an important contributor to the country’s economy, with 69% of recent Liberal voters and 58% of recent Conservative voters sharing this view.

Overall, the poll suggests that Canadians are becoming increasingly supportive of marijuana legalization, and that the industry is viewed as a valuable component of the country’s economy.
