Kentucky Lawmakers Introduce Bills to Legalize Cannabis for Adults
A pair of bills has been introduced in the Kentucky House and Senate, aiming to legalize cannabis for adults over the age of 21. The legislation, sponsored by Louisville representative Nima Kulkarni, would allow individuals to possess up to one ounce of cannabis and cultivate up to five plants.
If passed, the bills would put the decision in the hands of Kentuckians, rather than lawmakers. The proposed constitutional amendment would appear on the next election ballot, giving voters the opportunity to vote yes or no on the issue.
According to Representative Kulkarni, the advantage of this approach is that it would present the amendment on the ballot in a clear and concise manner. “It would say, do you agree with a constitutional amendment that would decriminalize marijuana or cannabis for adults 21 years and over?” she explained.
The bills, House Bill 199 and Senate Bill 168, are the latest efforts to reform Kentucky’s cannabis laws. If successful, the legislation could pave the way for a more permissive approach to cannabis use in the state.
