Cannabis Expert Weighs in on Possible Illegal Grow House Raid in Las Vegas
A recent raid on a suspected illegal marijuana grow house in Las Vegas has raised eyebrows among cannabis experts. Riana Durrett, executive director of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’s Cannabis Policy Institute, expressed surprise at the discovery, citing the significant odor control measures typically employed by licensed facilities.
Durrett pointed out that growing marijuana at home is legal in Nevada, but only under certain conditions. Residents must be at least 25 miles away from the nearest dispensary and are limited to cultivating up to 12 plants per household. With nearly 80 dispensaries in southern Nevada, it’s unclear how a large-scale illegal grow operation could have gone undetected for so long.
However, Durrett emphasized that the issue of illegal marijuana growing is just one part of a larger problem. She believes that the illegal cannabis market, as well as intoxicating hemp products, pose a greater threat to the state’s regulations and revenue.
According to Durrett, 30% of weed sales in the Las Vegas valley are illegal, resulting in a loss of $30 million in tax revenue for the state. This highlights the need for authorities to address the illegal cannabis market and ensure that only licensed dispensaries are operating in the area.
