New York’s Cannabis Industry Calls for Support from Governor to Achieve Equitable Marketplace

A coalition of five organizations representing New York’s cannabis industry has sent a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul urging her to take action on seven key issues to create a safe, legal, and equitable marketplace. The organizations, which include cultivators, processors, retailers, and medical interests, are calling for measures to stabilize the industry and achieve its goals.

The groups, which have not always seen eye-to-eye on the industry’s future, are now united in their efforts to promote a profitable and sustainable industry. They point out that it has been a decade since New York began regulating cannabis through a medical use program, and five years since the retail sale of marijuana was legalized.

The organizations, including the New York Medical Cannabis Industry Association, Empire Cannabis Manufacturers Alliance, New York Cannabis Retail Association, Association of New York Cannabis Processors, and Cannabis Association of New York, emphasized the importance of effective enforcement, transparency, predictability, and support for licensees navigating the complex regulatory environment.

In their letter, the organizations stated that they share a commitment to protecting public health, ensuring consumer safety, and fostering a marketplace where compliant businesses of all sizes can operate sustainably. They believe that achieving these goals requires meaningful support from the state and are urging Governor Hochul to take action on the issues they have identified.
