Nevada County to Launch Illicit Cannabis Enforcement Team with $4.5 Million Grant
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a $4.5 million grant to establish the Enforcement and Prevention of Illicit Cannabis in Nevada County (EPIC-NC) team. The five-year program aims to strengthen public safety, protect the environment, and expand youth prevention and education programs in the county.
Despite the legalization of recreational cannabis in California in 2016, illegal cannabis cultivation remains a significant problem in Nevada County. The county’s remote terrain and proximity to public lands make it an attractive location for illegal cultivation operations, which have been linked to violent crime, property crime, and environmental damage.
In recent years, the sheriff’s office has conducted numerous investigations into illicit cannabis operations, resulting in the eradication of thousands of illegal plants and the seizure of large quantities of processed cannabis. However, these operations have also been associated with environmental violations, including illegal water diversions and pollution.
The EPIC-NC team will consist of two deputy sheriff detectives, one sheriff’s crime analyst, and one regional parks public safety and youth prevention coordinator. The team will be equipped with specialized investigative software, digital forensic tools, and enhanced compliance and enforcement technology to strengthen the county’s response to illicit cannabis activity.
The program will also focus on prevention efforts, including community outreach and education programs designed to prevent youth cannabis use. The county’s public safety and youth prevention coordinator will work to engage youth in positive, structured recreational activities and provide evidence-based education and outreach related to cannabis prevention.
The EPIC-NC initiative reflects a coordinated, countywide approach to addressing the public safety, environmental, and community impacts associated with illicit cannabis. Implementation of the program is expected to begin in July.
