International Travelers Warned: Bringing Cannabis Products Can Result in Serious Consequences
The U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Thailand has issued a warning to American travelers about a new customs policy that went into effect on June 17. According to the policy, individuals caught with cannabis products in their luggage, even unintentionally, can face severe penalties, including up to 10 years in prison, a fine of nearly $15,000, or both.
Thailand, which decriminalized cannabis in 2022, now requires travelers to obtain proper permissions before crossing borders with cannabis products. The U.S. Embassy advises that travelers are subject to local laws abroad and cannot rely on the U.S. government to guarantee their release if detained or arrested.
This warning comes as a reminder that travelers can face serious consequences for bringing cannabis products to other countries. She was released in a prisoner exchange deal after serving 10 months.
