New Mexico’s Cannabis Industry Under Fire: Enforcement Bureau Cracks Down on Illegal Operations

New Mexico’s Cannabis Industry Faces Increased Scrutiny

The New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department’s Enforcement Bureau has been actively investigating illegal cannabis operations, regulatory violations, and potentially unsafe products since its inception in January 2026. The bureau was established following legislation passed in 2025.

According to Chief Vince Mares, the bureau has opened over two dozen active criminal cases, with new reports of suspected violations pouring in daily. “We have 24 and some active criminal cases since we’ve been active in January of 26. And we’re getting calls every day,” Mares stated.

One notable case involves an unlicensed cannabis operation in Torrance County, where authorities discovered more than 21,000 pounds of cannabis growing inside 21 greenhouses. This discovery was initially highlighted in a 2024 investigation by KRQE Chief Investigative Reporter Larry Barker. The case remains active following a two-month investigation that led to a search warrant. “The case is still very active,” Mares confirmed.

The New Mexico Cannabis Enforcement Bureau is working to ensure the state’s cannabis industry operates safely and legally, cracking down on illegal operations and promoting compliance with regulations.
