PleoPharma to Present Research on Cannabis Withdrawal Symptoms in Women
PleoPharma, a clinical-stage development company focused on cannabis-related health issues, will present findings from a survey on women’s experiences with frequent cannabis use, cessation efforts, and cannabis withdrawal symptoms at The Menopause Society’s 2026 Annual Meeting in San Diego.
The survey, conducted by Bryter Inc., gathered data from 146 women who had attempted to quit or reduce their cannabis use. The results showed that 90% of respondents reported experiencing at least one withdrawal symptom, with 61% of these symptoms occurring within 24 hours of last use and 12% within three hours. Additionally, 84% of women sought medical help to manage withdrawal symptoms or reduce their cannabis use, and approximately two-thirds expressed interest in medication-assisted treatment.
The study highlights the growing concern of cannabis use disorder among women in midlife and beyond. National survey data has shown a significant increase in moderate to severe cannabis use disorder among women aged 35-49 and 50 and older.
Shelli Graham, PhD, senior vice president of clinical research and medical affairs at PleoPharma, emphasized the importance of the research, stating, “This study underscores the need for a product to help women struggling with cannabis dependence.”
PleoPharma is developing an investigational product, PP-01, designed to mitigate cannabis withdrawal symptoms in patients with cannabis use disorder. The company aims to provide a once-daily oral treatment with rapid onset of action.
The PleoPharma team consists of experienced professionals with a track record of producing high-value exits, securing worldwide product approvals, and filing INDs.
