Michigan Communities to Decide Fate of Marijuana Businesses in November Election

Michigan Communities to Vote on Marijuana Proposals in November Election

As the November election approaches, voters in several Oakland County communities will have the opportunity to weigh in on marijuana-related proposals. Since recreational marijuana was legalized statewide in December 2018, some communities have chosen to ban or restrict marijuana businesses from operating within their boundaries.

Royal Oak Township will be the only community with a single proposal on the ballot, asking residents to decide whether to completely prohibit marijuana establishments. Clawson, on the other hand, will have an amendment proposal that, if passed, would allow for the opening of two recreational cannabis stores in the city. This proposal is similar to one that was previously rejected in four other metro Detroit cities due to a court ruling.

Lathrup Village will have two pot-related ballot proposals. The first proposal seeks to repeal a previously instituted law that prohibited cannabis dispensaries in the city, while the second proposal would change the city’s ordinance to allow for the establishment of two retail facilities and two safety compliance facilities.

These proposals will give voters in these communities the opportunity to shape their local marijuana laws and decide whether to allow or prohibit the sale of recreational cannabis within their boundaries.
