Minnesota’s First Non-Tribal Cannabis Shops Open for Business
After a two-year wait, non-tribal cannabis dispensaries in Minnesota have finally started selling recreational marijuana. The first shop to open is Legacy Cannabis in Duluth, which began selling cannabis products on Tuesday at 4:20 pm. Other locations in the Twin Cities metro are also opening their doors on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Legacy Cannabis, located on West Superior Street, will be selling cannabis flower grown by the White Earth Nation. Green Goods, a cannabis retailer with eight locations, including five in the metro, started offering recreational products at all of its shops on Tuesday. RISE Cannabis is also set to open five recreational dispensaries, including three in the metro, one in Willmar, and another in Mankato, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 8 am at all five locations.
The opening of these non-tribal cannabis shops comes after a period of supply challenges. Although many shops received their licenses to sell cannabis two months ago, they were unable to stock their shelves due to a lack of available product. This was because Minnesota shops can only sell cannabis grown in the state, and the cultivator licenses were issued at the same time as retail licenses.
However, a compact recently cleared the way for cannabis shops to obtain products from the tribes, and the state issued licenses to two medical cannabis dispensaries, including Green Goods and RISE, allowing them to sell recreational products. This has finally enabled non-tribal cannabis shops to start selling recreational marijuana to the public.
