Alabama Medical Cannabis Program Takes Step Forward as Dispensaries Prepare to Open
After a five-year wait, Alabama is finally poised to launch its medical cannabis program, with dispensaries set to open their doors to patients. To access the program, patients must first obtain a recommendation from a certified physician and register with the state.
The program, which was approved in 2017, allows patients to use non-smokable forms of cannabis, such as tablets, capsules, and tinctures, to manage their conditions. However, smokable cannabis and edible food products are prohibited under state law.
Dr. Clinton Scott Williams, one of the first physicians in Alabama authorized to make medical cannabis recommendations, believes the program could greatly benefit patients suffering from chronic pain and depression. As the program moves closer to reality, patients are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to access this new treatment option.
