Alabama’s Medical Cannabis Program Faces Uncertainty as Patients Seek Clarity

As Alabama prepares to open its first medical cannabis dispensaries, patients are seeking clarity on the program. The Alabama Cannabis Coalition, a advocacy group, is receiving daily inquiries from potential patients who feel uncertain about how to access the program. According to H. Marty Schelper, the coalition’s founder, the state needs to provide more information to the public to ensure the program’s success.

While employees of the dispensaries will undergo mandatory training next week, Schelper believes it’s the public who needs more education. She emphasizes that without proper understanding, the progress of the program will be hindered. The coalition is urging the state to provide clear guidelines on how medical cannabis will work in Alabama.

It’s essential to note that this is not a legalization of recreational marijuana, and patients will require a doctor’s referral to purchase medical cannabis products. Only specific items, such as suppositories, gels, and pills, will be available in the dispensaries. Edibles and smokable products will not be sold. Additionally, doctors have strict guidelines on which conditions can be treated with these products.

As the program prepares to launch, it’s crucial that the state provides clear information to patients, ensuring a smooth and successful rollout.
