Buffalo Cannabis Business Owners Struggle with Inconsistent Regulations Amid Industry Boom

Buffalo Cannabis Business Owners Express Frustration with Regulations

Five years after New York legalized marijuana, the state’s cannabis industry is booming, generating billions of dollars. However, local business owners are expressing frustration with the rollout, citing inconsistencies and gaps in regulations.

A recent listening session held by the State Office of Cannabis Management in downtown Buffalo brought together licensed growers, dispensers, cultivators, and on-site consumption operators to share their concerns. Many business owners emphasized the need for clarity and consistency in regulations, particularly regarding on-site consumption licenses.

John Averill, owner of The Roaring Four Twenties Lounge, a private club where people can consume cannabis, is still unable to legally sell it. He expressed disappointment that the state has not provided a clear reason for the delay. “No one has given me a reason why it hasn’t been done,” he said.

Simone Washington, chief equity officer for the state cannabis office, acknowledged the issues and emphasized that the law is designed to bring revenue back to communities harmed by past drug laws. She noted that the industry is generating revenue beyond what was predicted, with $3.3 billion in sales so far this year.

Despite the challenges, some local dispensaries are thriving. The Joint, a shop that opened last June, has seen business increase significantly, with customers seeking help with sleep and social issues. Andrew Lapenna, who works at The Joint, believes the stigma surrounding cannabis is slowly fading.

As the industry continues to evolve, local business owners are hoping for more clarity and consistency in regulations to ensure the success of their businesses.
