Delawareans Can Now Legally Purchase Recreational Marijuana: What You Need to Know
Starting August 1, Delaware will become the 19th state in the US to legalize recreational marijuana. This milestone comes after the state’s legalization bill was signed into law in 2023. A total of 12 dispensaries across the state will be selling legal marijuana to individuals 21 and older.
While marijuana is now legal, there are still regulations in place that consumers must follow. According to Nick Lee, who works at First State Compassion’s marijuana cultivation facility, Delaware has some of the strictest regulations in the country regarding the cleanliness and handling of the plant.
For personal use, Delaware law allows individuals to possess no more than a “personal use quantity” of marijuana, which is defined as 1 ounce or less of leaf marijuana, up to 12 grams of concentrated cannabis, or cannabis products containing 750 milligrams or less of delta-9 THC.
When it comes to using marijuana, Delaware law prohibits smoking in public areas, such as parks and sidewalks, and using it in a vehicle. Driving under the influence of marijuana is also illegal.
There are 12 dispensaries across the state where individuals can purchase recreational marijuana, including Columbia Care Wilmington, Thrive Wilmington, Field Supply Cannabis & Provisions, and more. Every facility in the state selling recreational marijuana as of August 1 is a converted medical marijuana dispensary, and state law requires them to continue operations as medical providers. Medical customers will be given priority service.
Notably, some medical marijuana dispensaries, such as Fresh Delaware locations in Milford and Seaford, will remain medical-only for now due to municipal bans on marijuana retail.
With the legalization of recreational marijuana, Delawareans can now access this product legally. However, it is essential to remember to follow the regulations and guidelines set forth by the state to ensure a safe and responsible use of marijuana.
