“Green Wednesday” Surges as Americans Trade Booze for Cannabis Ahead of Thanksgiving
As the biggest shopping day of the year, Black Friday, approaches, a different kind of rush is happening in the cannabis industry. Dubbed “Green Wednesday,” the day before Thanksgiving has become the second-highest day of the year for cannabis sales, with dispensaries reporting record-breaking numbers.
According to Dutchie, an e-commerce platform used by thousands of dispensaries across the US, average sales increased by 91% on November 27, 2024, compared to a typical Wednesday. The average basket size per shopper also saw a 9% increase, reaching over $70.
New York dispensaries reported even higher numbers, with medical baskets reaching over $106.
The surge in sales can be attributed to dispensaries offering significant discounts on products like pre-rolls, edibles, gummies, vapes, and flowers. Additionally, many consumers are opting for cannabis as an alternative to alcohol, a trend that is expected to continue.
However, experts are cautioning about the potential health risks associated with cannabis use. Recent studies have linked marijuana use to increased mental health challenges, such as paranoia, anxiety, and depression, as well as a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Cannabis potency has also increased significantly over the years, with many products now containing as much as 30% THC, compared to the 1% average in the 1960s and 1970s.
Despite these risks, the cannabis industry is expected to continue growing, with industry analysts predicting that more Americans will opt for cannabis over alcohol in the coming years.
As the holiday season approaches, cannabis retailers are encouraging customers to take advantage of the pre-holiday deals, while also offering safety tips to ensure responsible consumption. These tips include knowing your dose, staying hydrated, not driving under the influence, and keeping cannabis products safely stored away from children and pets.
As Green Wednesday becomes an increasingly popular phenomenon, it’s clear that the cannabis industry is here to stay, and consumers are embracing the trend. But it’s essential to remember the potential risks and take steps to ensure responsible use.
