Alabama Medical Cannabis Set to Launch in April or May
After a nearly five-year wait, medical cannabis is finally set to hit the shelves in Alabama. The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission Chairman, Rex Vaughn, has confirmed that the rollout of medical marijuana products is expected to begin in late April or early May.
The commission has licensed four dispensary companies, nine growers, and four processors, with plans to open 12 dispensary locations across the state. Two of these locations will be in North Alabama, in Athens and Owens Cross Roads. However, one of the dispensary companies, Yellowhammer Medical Dispensaries, LLC., has a stay on its license due to an appeal filed by a company that was not awarded a license.
Despite the delay, Vaughn expressed frustration at the lengthy process, saying it’s not only frustrating for commission members but also for patients who are waiting to access the product. He emphasized that the legal system can take a long time to operate, but the commission is working to move forward.
The application process is currently open for patients to seek clearance for medical cannabis, and there is no maximum amount set for qualifying physicians or patients. Vaughn highlighted the medical benefits of cannabis, including its potential to help patients undergoing cancer treatment and prevent epileptic seizures.
However, with only five physicians licensed to recommend medical cannabis and only nine fully-licensed dispensary locations, patients may need to travel long distances to access the product. The state will monitor demand for the product and consider future expansions to meet patient needs.
The launch of medical cannabis in Alabama marks a significant milestone for the state, offering a new treatment option for patients who may have been unable to find relief through traditional medicine.
