Tennessee Democrats Push for Recreational Marijuana Legalization
A new bill aims to legalize recreational marijuana in Tennessee, as well as establish a framework for its cultivation, processing, transportation, and retail sale. Senate Bill 2440, sponsored by Senator Heidi Campbell, was introduced in February and has already cleared its first and second readings in the state Senate. A companion bill, House Bill 2525, will be heard in the Criminal Justice Subcommittee on March 25.
The proposal has raised concerns among some business owners, including one from Mt. Juliet who fears the new laws could be “dangerous.” Despite the ongoing debate, Tennessee remains one of the strictest states when it comes to marijuana laws, with both recreational and medical use still illegal. In fact, local municipalities are no longer allowed to decriminalize possession of cannabis, according to Tennessee Cannabis Information.
The push for legalization is nothing new in the Tennessee General Assembly, with lawmakers frequently introducing bills related to marijuana use. However, with the new proposals gaining momentum, it remains to be seen whether the state will take a step towards relaxing its marijuana laws.
