Trump Administration Takes Step Towards Easing Restrictions on Medical Marijuana
In a move aimed at boosting medical research, the Trump administration has announced plans to reclassify medical marijuana as a lower-risk drug. This decision comes just days after President Donald Trump expressed frustration with the pace of easing federal restrictions on illegal drugs.
According to the Justice Department, marijuana products that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be reclassified as Schedule III drugs, similar to common prescription painkillers. This change is expected to enable more targeted and rigorous research into the safety and efficacy of marijuana, ultimately expanding patients’ access to treatments and empowering doctors to make better-informed healthcare decisions.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized the importance of this move, stating that it will “enable more targeted, rigorous research into marijuana’s safety and efficacy.” The administration has also announced plans to hold a new hearing to fully reschedule marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act.
Medical marijuana has long been classified as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin, but advocates have been pushing for a reclassification to Schedule III. This move brings national policy closer to legitimizing state laws that have authorized medical marijuana businesses, ending years of stalemates over compliance with federal law.
Howard Kessler, a longtime Trump supporter and founder of the Commonwealth Project, a pro-medical-cannabis group, hailed the decision as a “long-overdue correction” that treats cannabis as medicine. However, not all groups were pleased with the announcement, with some citing the administration’s recent move to ease access to psychedelics.
The reclassification of medical marijuana is expected to have a significant impact on the medical community, allowing for more research and potentially leading to the development of new treatments. As the administration continues to navigate the complex issue of drug policy, this move marks a significant step towards easing restrictions on medical marijuana.
