Breakthrough in Marijuana Breathalyzer Development: 3D-Printed Device Shows Promise
The development of a marijuana breathalyzer is one step closer to reality after researchers successfully tested a 3D-printed prototype. As more states legalize marijuana for recreational use, law enforcement agencies are struggling to find effective ways to detect drivers impaired by the drug. Currently, there are 24 states and Washington D.C. where marijuana is legal, and authorities are seeking a solution to prevent accidents caused by impaired driving.
A team of researchers, led by Professor Emanuele Alves of Virginia Commonwealth University, has been working on developing a THC breathalyzer that can deliver results within minutes and distinguish between THC and CBD to minimize false positives. The device uses 3D-printed test cartridges with special dyes to detect the chemicals Delta-9 THC, CBD, and CBN, which are found in marijuana.
The study, funded by the Justice Department, published its findings last month. The researchers analyzed the color of the dyes and found that they could detect the presence of THC and CBD. The results showed two distinct clusters, one for CBD and another for Delta-9 THC and CBN, indicating early evidence of selectivity for certain analytes.
While more testing is needed, the study provides a framework for future roadside or point-of-collection testing technologies. Professor Alves believes that a marijuana breathalyzer could reduce the number of accidents caused by impaired drivers, making roads safer for everyone. The development of such a device could also serve as a deterrent for people considering driving under the influence of marijuana.
The researchers’ achievement marks a significant milestone in the development of a marijuana breathalyzer, and it is a step closer to making this technology available to law enforcement agencies and the public.
