Kentucky Community Welcomes Second Medical Marijuana Dispensary
On a chilly winter morning, over two dozen Kentuckians braved the 21-degree temperatures to be among the first to purchase medical marijuana at Speakeasy Dispensary in Lexington. The dispensary, which officially opened its doors on January 15, is the second of its kind in the state, offering a new medical care option to patients across Kentucky.
Matthew Williams, a Lexington resident, was among the early risers, expressing his enthusiasm for the alternative to traditional pharmaceuticals. “Pharmaceuticals often come with more side effects than benefits,” he said. “Herbs and medicinal cannabis, on the other hand, offer a more natural solution.”
The sale of medical marijuana was legalized in Kentucky on January 1, 2025, and since then, over 17,300 residents have been approved for medical cannabis cards, according to Governor Andy Beshear. The products available at dispensaries include edibles, oils, tinctures, vapes, and raw plant material, with the state law strictly prohibiting smoking.
While recreational marijuana remains illegal in the commonwealth, medical marijuana can be prescribed by licensed physicians to alleviate symptoms of certain medical conditions, including cancer, PTSD, epilepsy, and chronic pain.
Speakeasy Dispensary associate Keely Kingslover consulted with customers, helping them navigate the options available. The dispensary’s opening marks a significant milestone in Kentucky’s medical marijuana journey, bringing a new level of medical care to the community.
