Curaleaf Makes History as First to Supply Medical Cannabis in Spain
In a significant milestone, Curaleaf has become the first company to supply medical cannabis preparations in Spain under the country’s new Royal Decree 903/2025. The company’s subsidiary, Medalchemy, has received approval from the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices for two standardized THC and CBD preparations. This achievement marks a crucial step forward for patient access to high-quality, regulated treatments through hospital pharmacies.
The approval is a testament to Curaleaf’s commitment to providing standardized, high-quality cannabis medicines to patients. According to Boris Jordan, CEO and Chairman of Curaleaf, “This achievement reflects the strength of our team, our sustained investment in science, and our conviction that patients deserve access to standardized, high-quality cannabis medicines.”
The new law allows patients with severe health conditions to access standardized medical cannabis treatments, which will be dispensed exclusively through hospital pharmacies. While cannabis flowers are excluded from the medical cannabis program, hospital specialists can prescribe standardized formulas that can be dispensed through hospital pharmacies.
Curaleaf’s expansion into Europe is a strategic move, as the company seeks to strengthen its market presence on the continent. The company has already established a presence in Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Germany, and is further expanding its operations in Canada. In Q1 2026, Curaleaf’s international revenue rose 35% year over year, while total company revenue increased 6% to $324 million.
The company’s intensified focus on Europe reflects a shift as North American recreational cannabis market growth decelerates. With international revenue already climbing, Curaleaf is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for medical cannabis in Europe. As the company continues to expand its operations, it is likely to remain a major player in the European pharma medical cannabis market.
