New Study Suggests Cannabis May Help Reduce Risk of Atrial Fibrillation
A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology has found that regular cannabis use may have a positive impact on reducing the risk of atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder that can lead to serious health issues. The study, which involved 108 adults who regularly used cannabis, found that those who used the drug experienced fewer premature heartbeats on days they smoked or vaped cannabis compared to days they abstained.
The study, which was conducted over a 14-day period, used continuously recording electrocardiographic monitors, glucose monitors, activity trackers, and sleep monitors to track the participants’ heart rhythms and other health metrics. On each day, participants were randomly assigned to either inhale cannabis or abstain from it.
The results showed that regular cannabis users experienced a 9% reduction in premature heartbeats on days they inhaled cannabis compared to days they abstained. The study also found that the reduction in premature heartbeats was driven by a decrease in the number of premature atrial contractions (PACs), which are a common type of abnormal heart rhythm.
Senior author of the study, Dr. Gregory Marcus, emphasized that while the study’s findings are promising, they should not be taken as evidence that cannabis is good for cardiovascular health. He noted that the overall health effects of inhaled cannabis may still be net negative, and that more research is needed to fully understand the drug’s effects on the heart.
The study’s findings are significant because atrial fibrillation is a common condition that can increase the risk of stroke, blood clots, and other serious health problems. The study’s authors hope that their research will motivate future randomized trials to further investigate the effects of cannabis on the heart and to identify potential new therapies for atrial fibrillation.
