Thailand to Ban Recreational Marijuana Use, Reversing 2022 Decriminalization Decision

Thailand to Introduce New Law Banning Recreational Marijuana Use

The Thai government has announced plans to introduce a new law banning the recreational use of marijuana, following a decision to decriminalize the drug in 2022. The move comes after the country saw a surge in cannabis dispensaries, particularly in Bangkok, sparking concerns among critics.

Under the previous government, cannabis was removed from the list of banned narcotics in June 2022, allowing for its use for both medicinal and recreational purposes. However, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who took office last August, has consistently expressed opposition to the recreational use of the drug, stating that it should only be allowed for medicinal purposes.

Health Minister Chonlanan Srikaew has confirmed that a new bill will be proposed to the cabinet next week, which will amend the existing law to only permit the use of cannabis for health and medicinal purposes. The minister emphasized that the use of cannabis for recreational purposes is considered “wrong.”

The decision comes after a recent incident at a Coldplay concert in Bangkok, where attendees complained on social media that the entire event smelled like marijuana. This has added to the pressure on the government to take action and tighten regulations on the drug.

The new law is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s cannabis industry, which has grown rapidly since decriminalization. The government’s move is seen as a step towards regaining control over the industry and ensuring that cannabis is used responsibly.
