Medical Marijuana Stigma Remains Among Mainstream Physicians Despite Growing Acceptance
As National Cancer Survivors Month comes to a close, a webinar hosted by Trulieve, Florida’s largest medical marijuana company, highlighted the ongoing stigma surrounding medical marijuana among mainstream physicians. The event brought together physicians and cancer survivors to discuss the benefits of cannabis as a treatment option.
Dr. William Troutt, a licensed naturopathic doctor, emphasized that oncologists are often more open to the use of cannabis due to its long history of alleviating nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy. However, he acknowledged that many medical professionals remain hesitant to recommend medicinal qualities beyond cancer treatment.
Amanda Hingson, a Tampa woman who survived three bouts with cancer, shared her personal experience with medical marijuana. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, lung recurrence, and breast cancer and was prescribed a feeding tube during treatment. She became malnourished and struggled with pain, anxiety, and emotional instability until she was given a Marinol pill, which improved her quality of life.
Hingson now works for Trulieve and manages a dispensary in Tampa. She credits medical marijuana for helping her manage her symptoms and maintain a healthy appetite. She has since stopped using pain and anxiety medications, opting instead for cannabis products.
Troutt highlighted the numerous benefits of cannabis for cancer treatment, including sleep assistance, anxiety relief, and reduced swelling. He also noted that marijuana can address many symptoms of cancer and treatment with fewer toxic side effects than manufactured prescription drugs.
Despite the growing acceptance of medical marijuana, Troutt acknowledged that many physicians and oncologists remain reluctant to recommend its use due to a lack of training in cannabis medicines. However, he emphasized that there are specialized cannabis professionals who can guide patients and make personalized recommendations.
The webinar aimed to raise awareness about the benefits of medical marijuana and encourage more mainstream physicians to consider its medicinal qualities. As the public’s perception of cannabis continues to evolve, it is essential for medical professionals to stay informed and open-minded about its potential as a treatment option.
