Ann Arbor Council Loosens Marijuana Dispensary Rules Near Schools

Ann Arbor Relaxes Marijuana Dispensary Regulations Near Schools

In a unanimous decision, the Ann Arbor City Council has voted to temporarily relax the city’s 1,000-foot distance requirement between marijuana dispensaries and schools. The change will allow some dispensaries to operate near educational institutions in two specific areas.

The affected areas include a 250-foot radius around the Doughty Montessori School at 416 S. Ashley St. and a 750-foot radius around the Progress Park School at 3980 Research Park Drive. The move aims to allow existing dispensaries to continue operating in their current locations, rather than forcing them to close or relocate.

The decision was made to accommodate dispensaries that have already established themselves in the community, including Kings High, which is trying to open in the former JARS Cannabis location at 450 S. Main St. Other affected dispensaries include Jungle House at 338 S. Ashley St. and Crave Cannabis at 3860 Research Park Drive.

The city’s decision to relax its regulations is intended to balance the need to regulate the marijuana industry with the need to allow existing businesses to continue operating. The city will continue to monitor the situation and may make further changes to its regulations in the future.
