US Cannabis Company Curaleaf Makes Bid for Aurora Cannabis
In a move that could significantly expand its global reach, Curaleaf Holdings, a leading US cannabis company, has launched a takeover bid for Canadian cannabis retailer Aurora Cannabis. The proposal values Aurora at approximately $260 million, with shareholders set to receive a combination of Curaleaf shares and cash for each Aurora share.
Under the terms of the offer, Aurora shareholders would receive 0.3463 Curaleaf shares and $0.75 in cash for each Aurora share, totaling $4 per share. The offer is capped at $5 per share if Curaleaf’s stock price rises above a certain level. Aurora’s shares closed at $3.94 on Friday.
Aurora has been struggling financially, reporting a loss of $0.07 per share in its first quarter of fiscal 2027 and carrying $93.7 million in debt. However, the company’s strong market presence in Europe makes it an attractive target for Curaleaf. The acquisition would allow Curaleaf to leverage its operational expertise to sell Aurora’s high-quality products and expand its global footprint.
This move comes as Curaleaf seeks to strengthen its position in the cannabis industry. The company has a history of profitability and has seen revenue and earnings growth in recent quarters. In contrast, Green Thumb Industries, another major US cannabis company, may be more likely to use its cash reserves to repurchase its own stock rather than taking on debt to make an acquisition.
