New Mexico’s Cannabis Industry Reaches $2.2 Billion in Sales
Since the legalization of medical cannabis in 2022 and recreational cannabis in 2024, New Mexico’s cannabis industry has seen significant growth, with total sales reaching over $2.2 billion. According to the New Mexico Regulations and Licensing Department, licensed cannabis businesses have reported a combined total of $2.2 billion in medical and adult-use sales over the past four years.
The revenue generated from the regulated cannabis market has had a positive impact on local businesses and communities, with excise tax dollars being contributed to communities throughout the state. Sunland Park, a town located along the Texas-New Mexico border, has been a top spot for cannabis sales, with over $16 million in medical and recreational sales between January and March 2026.
In the first quarter of 2026, the top three cities for cannabis sales in New Mexico were Albuquerque, Sunland Park, and Las Cruces. Albuquerque saw the highest sales, with over $13.3 million in combined medical and recreational sales. Sunland Park came in second, with over $5.3 million in combined sales, while Las Cruces saw over $2.6 million in combined sales.
Other towns along the Texas-New Mexico border also saw strong sales, with Chaparral collecting around $3 million, Santa Teresa collecting around $445,000, and Ruidoso raising more than $1.8 million in the first quarter of 2026.
The success of New Mexico’s cannabis industry is a testament to the state’s regulatory efforts and the growing demand for legal cannabis products. As the industry continues to grow, it is likely to have a positive impact on local economies and communities across the state.
