Maine Lawmakers Consider Bill to Improve Cannabis Safety
The Maine legislature is racing against a midweek deadline to complete unfinished business, and a key proposal could have a significant impact on the state’s marijuana industry. The bill, which is up for initial votes, aims to revamp rules for both medical and recreational cannabis programs by introducing testing for contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals, and other substances.
Proponents of the bill argue that the changes are necessary to ensure consumer safety. However, caregivers who oppose the proposal claim that it would harm their business. To alleviate concerns, supporters point out that small caregivers with limited operations would be exempt from testing requirements, but would still need to label their products as untested.
Critics, like Lizzy Hayes, argue that the financial support programs offered to caregivers would not be sufficient, as they would need to spend a significant portion of their income on testing. The bill has already failed in the House and will now move to the Senate for further consideration.
