Ohio’s Recreational Marijuana Market Reaches $1.5 Billion in Sales
Since the legalization of recreational marijuana in Ohio two years ago, the state’s market has generated a staggering $1.5 billion in sales. Additionally, communities with dispensaries have received over $55 million in revenue from the state’s marijuana excise tax. These figures provide insight into the size and scope of the market that the next governor of Ohio will inherit.
The figures also highlight significant changes to the system since voters approved Issue 2 in 2023. While lawmakers retained the 10% excise tax on recreational marijuana, they redirected most of the revenue away from its original intended purposes. This shift has sparked debate among gubernatorial candidates, with Democrat Amy Acton and Libertarian Don Kissick pledging to preserve the recreational marijuana system. Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, however, has not yet outlined his plan for the system.
