Thailand to Ban Recreational Use of Marijuana
The Thai government is set to introduce a new law to ban the recreational use of cannabis, following the country’s decision to decriminalize the drug in 2022. The move comes after hundreds of cannabis dispensaries sprouted up around the country, particularly in Bangkok, sparking concerns from critics who argue that tighter legislation is needed.
Health Minister Chonlanan Srikaew announced that the new bill will be proposed to the cabinet next week, aiming to amend the existing law to only allow the use of cannabis for health and medicinal purposes. The minister emphasized that recreational use is considered wrong and should not be tolerated.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who took office in August, has consistently expressed his opposition to the recreational use of cannabis, advocating for its use only for medicinal purposes. The decision comes after attendees of British rock band Coldplay’s concerts in Bangkok complained on social media about the strong smell of marijuana at the events.
The new law is expected to bring stricter regulations to the cannabis industry in Thailand, which has seen a surge in popularity since the drug was decriminalized in 2022. The government’s move is aimed at addressing concerns about the drug’s recreational use and ensuring that it is only used for its intended medicinal purposes.
