Georgia Expands Medical Cannabis Options with New Legislation

The Georgia General Assembly has approved Senate Bill 220, which will allow medical cannabis dispensaries to sell a broader range of products to patients. The bill removes the current 5% THC limit on products, enabling the sale of marijuana vapes and leaf marijuana for home use.

According to Botanical Sciences Dispensary CEO Gary Long, the new legislation transforms Georgia’s medical cannabis program, bringing it in line with other states that have similar programs. The company, which grows marijuana in Georgia, will be able to offer a wider variety of products at its five dispensaries.

To access medical marijuana, patients must first obtain a doctor’s authorization. The medication is prescribed for a range of chronic medical conditions, including seizure disorders, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, and intractable pain. The new bill will also add lupus to the list of eligible conditions.

Under the new law, medical cannabis patients will have greater flexibility in terms of the products they can use to manage their symptoms. The expansion of the program is expected to improve the quality of life for many patients in Georgia.
